SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO: what each one means for your business
By Saravan Bhatia ·
The short answerSEO helps people find the right page in search results. AEO shapes content so it answers a question directly. GEO makes your business information clear and consistent enough for AI-assisted search to understand and reference. AIO, AI optimisation, is the umbrella name for the result: being found and described accurately wherever AI answers. They share the same foundations, so most businesses need one well-built site rather than four separate projects.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
They are three views of the same job. SEO is about being found in search results, AEO is about being the clearest answer to a specific question, and GEO is about being understood and referenced by AI-assisted search such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity.
Search engine optimisation (SEO) covers everything that helps a search engine crawl, understand and rank a page: speed, structure, titles, internal links and content that matches what people search for.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is a content discipline. It puts a direct answer at the top of a section, then supports it with specifics, so the answer can be lifted into a featured snippet or a voice result without losing its meaning.
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is about the business as an entity: whether its name, services, locations, prices and credentials are stated consistently, in structured data and in plain text, so an AI system can describe it accurately.
Do I need all three?
You need the foundations all three rely on, which is usually one project, not three. A fast, crawlable site with one page per real question, direct answers and consistent business facts serves search engines, answer boxes and AI assistants at the same time.
Google has said that the same best practices that help pages in Search also apply to its AI features, and that there are no extra technical requirements to appear in them. Work that claims a separate secret method for AI is worth questioning.
What does SEO work involve today?
Making every important page easy to crawl, fast to load and clearly about one thing, then connecting those pages so both people and search engines can follow the path from a question to an enquiry.
- One page per genuine search intent, with no near-duplicate pages for each city or keyword
- A unique title and description for every page, and a canonical address on your own domain
- Fast loading on a phone, and content that is in the HTML rather than hidden behind scripts
- Internal links that lead from a question to the service and from the service to proof
- A sitemap and Search Console, so you can see what is indexed and what people search for
What does AEO work involve?
Writing each important section as a question and a direct answer, then the detail. The answer should make sense on its own, because that is how it will be quoted.
- Question headings that use the words buyers actually use
- A one to three sentence answer directly under each heading
- Specifics after the answer: steps, prices, timelines and limits, in lists or tables where that helps
- FAQs only where the questions are real, with answers that match what the page says elsewhere
What does GEO work involve?
Stating the facts about your business the same way everywhere they appear, in forms machines can read, so an AI system has no conflicting versions to choose between.
- Organization and service structured data that matches the visible page
- The same business name, services, markets and contact details on every page and profile
- Clear authorship, and case studies that say exactly what the relationship and results were
- A plain-text summary for AI crawlers, such as an llms.txt file, as a convenience rather than a ranking lever
- References from other sites that are earned by the work, never bought or exchanged
What is AIO, and where does it fit?
AIO, AI optimisation, is the umbrella term for making a business visible and accurately described wherever AI answers questions: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. It is the outcome of SEO, AEO and GEO done well, not a separate technique.
You will see AIO used in two ways: as that umbrella, and more narrowly for appearing in Google’s AI Overviews. Either way, the work is the same foundations: pages search engines can crawl, direct answers, and consistent, verifiable facts about the business.
What AIO adds is where you look. Beyond rankings, it asks whether AI assistants can find the business at all, and whether what they say about it is correct.
- Keep the site open to the crawlers AI assistants use, in robots.txt
- Make sure the site is indexed in Bing as well as Google: Microsoft Copilot answers from Bing
- Ask the assistants about the business, and fix the source when an answer is wrong
- Keep facts current, so an assistant never quotes an old price or address
What can nobody promise?
No one can guarantee a ranking, a place in an AI Overview, or that ChatGPT will recommend a business. Search engines and AI assistants decide for themselves, and none of them sells placement in its answers.
What can be promised is the work itself, done properly, and honest reporting on what moved and what did not.
How should the results be measured?
By the enquiries that search brings in, not by rankings alone. Rankings move for many reasons; enquiries from search are what the work is for.
- Impressions and clicks in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
- Enquiries and bookings that started from a search visit
- Visits referred by AI assistants, which appear in analytics as referrals from their domains
- Whether the business is described accurately when someone asks an assistant about it
